John Whipple House Activities

We periodically receive announcements from the Ipswich (Massachusetts) Historical Society, informing us of their activities. (The John Whipple House in Ipswich is one of their main attractions.)

The Ipswich Historical Society web site is at Email them at or phone them at 978-356-2811.

John Whipple has a page in the Whipple Genweb. (Note: This John Whipple is one of dozens or hundreds in the Whipple Genweb. This is not the same person as Captain John Whipple of Providence, Rhode Island.)

The Whipple Website has a page about the two immigrants named John Whipple: Two Immigrants Named John.

Flag Day

When I realized that today is Flag Day (in the U.S.), I immediately thought of Wayne Whipple and his "Whipple Flag." Blaine Whipple wrote an article on the Whipple Flag some nine years ago. In 1912 (when the Whipple Flag was conceived), federal law allowed more flexibility in flag design. Those of us born after the Flag Code was passed by Congress in 1942 won't remember the Whipple Flag. (From 1942 until Alaska and Hawaii joined the union, the official arrangement of the 48 stars was a 6 x 8 grid.)

Happy Flag Day, everyone!

Clara Barton

Today Blaine Whipple (see emailed about a web site devoted to Clara Barton's birthplace. You will recall that Clara Barton founded the Red Cross; did you know that she is also a Whipple? Ten years ago, Blaine wrote an article about her for the Whipple Website. You can trace her Whipple ancestry by visiting her page in the Whipple Genweb, scrolling down to her pedigree chart, then clicking on her ancestors.

Anyone for a Blog?

Well, everyone else is creating blogs. We might as well try having one--at least for awhile. The Whipple Website has become so big that parts of it tend to be neglected. Additionally, we sometimes receive photos or information of interest that is one of a kind--and doesn't warrant having a brand new section of the web site.

Perhaps this is a good place to post such information. (Let's go for it!)
